SUMMARY

Performs a variety of technical laboratory tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, using knowledge of medical laboratory techniques, procedures and equipment.

Prepares tissue specimens by treating with chemicals, slicing and mounting on glass slides for examination and analysis.

Makes members/patients and their needs a primary focus of one's actions; develops and sustains productive member/patient relationships.

Actively seeks information to understand member/patient circumstances, problems, expectations, and needs.

REQUIREMENTS

High school graduation and one of the following:

CAHEA

accredited histologic technician program or two years histology experience; or associate degree or equivalent and one year of histology experience.

Requires rotating to the surgical lab at the Franklin facility.

Certified as an

HT

(ASCP) within one year of employment in this position.

Must maintain certification..

Demonstrated customer service skills, customer focus abilities and the ability to understand Kaiser Permanente customer needs.



RESPONSIBILITIES

Prepares slides for microscopic examination and analysis for final diagnosis by Pathologist.

Prepares tissue specimens for Pathologist to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease; maintains appropriate quality control using standard statistical methods.

Assists in gross preparation of tissue for processing.

Sets up, adjusts and maintains laboratory equipment and apparatus such as tissue processor, balance microdome and stainers according to established protocols.

Subjects tissue specimens to automatic processing equipment to make qualitative and quantitative analysis; notifies supervisor of inconsistent processing, according to established protocols.

Adds reagents or stain solutions and subjects specimens to operations such as heating, agitating, filtering and staining, according to established procedures.

Monitors process to ensure that specimens are correctly processed.

Prepared stains, reagents, as needed.

Maintains appropriate inventory for area in cooperation with supervisor.

Keeps detailed records of all examinations performed; completes necessary quality control reports; identifies and labels specimens to be retained and stores them for further reference or research.

Counts and records specimens, sorts and files slides and specimens.

Performs the responsibilities of a Cytology/Histology Aide, as required.

Maintains cleanliness of work area, to include cleaning and maintain embedded center, refilling paraffin dispenser, washing metal base molds, cleaning and dismantling microdome to maintain proper working order and to lubricate moveable parts according to established schedule.

Logs information into computer, labels tissues and prints worksheets as required.
