Tired of all the jazz about 4G? Join the club. It seems like all the carriers are flocking to this new tech buzz word. Who cares though? It's a pretty well known fact that none of the wireless carriers including AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint have cell phone data service anywhere near 4G standards. What is the official 4G standard? How about 100 Mbps - and that's in both directions - to and from your phone. What does 100 Mbps mean to the average data user? It means you could send over 300 decent quality pictures to you friends on Facebook or Twitter in one second.
So you're probably wondering why should you care about 4G since you don't have or won't share 300 pics anyway right? Well that's a reasonable stance; I don't have 300 pics either but perhaps the bright star behind the 4G marketing buzz (and it really is just marketing) is that the 4G craze is creating a lot of jobs for wireless carriers. What's a lot of jobs? How about over 500,000 new jobs will be created in the next 10 years, with most within the next 5 years. Now that's impressive at least for the tech industry anyway. Stop whining these guys (techies) were eating soup and crackers 5 years ago when the housing and mortgage industry was booming. Every dog has its day. Anyway, although the jobs created are with wireless carriers they will be across the board in terms of actual positions including sales, marketing, call center operations, cell tower technicians, software engineers, and so on. Maybe not so many jobs in marketing though - it looks like that area is doing well already(you know 4G this, 4G that). So whether or not the real 4G stands up - one thing is for sure - 4G equals jobs.

So what's the approach to getting a pay raise without feeling like you are pulling your boss' teeth? Well the short answer is that there isn't a one size fits all approach. Sorry for the silver bullet seekers; silver bullets tend to work with Blade and Wesley Snipes. For the rest of us, the approach to getting a pay raise is more like an art versus a science. Here are a few pointers.
- Where is your current salary relative to salary standards for your position?
- If your current salary is already above median what incentive does your employer have to pay more i.e. what added value do you bring to the table that the average Joe can't bring to the table?
- Can your company afford to pay you more? Timing is everything?
- Do you have track record of performance with your employer? If you do and you also have a track record with previous employers that helps a bunch
- How important is the raise you desire i.e. would you quit for a raise or pout and get back to work?
Once you have a solid understanding of the above question, combined with your personal experience working on your current job, you're in the best position to make your pay raise sales pitch. So if you want to avoid the feeling of pulling teeth basically you need to be prepared and have all the necessary information available before hand. Don't go in and try to wing it, invariably something always happens that isn't planned when you wing it.

So McDonalds is doing well and wants to hire a few people right. What's wrong with that? Well it's a tough job working for Mickey D, especially when doing so involves being run over by a car. That is both hilarious and wacky at the same time. For one, what's the big deal about one job at McDonald's over the next that makes one want to run over someone else with their car. Lol. This is crazy! Are the benefits of shift leader at McDonalds that great to flatten the next guy (gal) in the process? Too funny, it must be the new McDonalds's chicken tenders that's causing all the tension and jockeying for shift leader positions. Maybe the shift leader gets a 20 piece order of chicken nuggets on the house each day. Surely, that's worth fighting for, especially if you throw in the Chipotle BBQ sauce. ROFL.
As it turns out, two women decided to fight over who had the right to opening and closing shift duty. Now that exchange leads to three people getting ran over with a Honda Civic. So McDonald’s big hiring event turns into a bloody drama event instead. Hummh, here's a thought...instead of launching a big hiring event targeting 50,000 new hires in places light Cleveland Ohio, why not raise the quality of the menu, increase the price point a bit then hire out of towns where the education level is higher and drama levels lower i.e. charge a little more, increase product service quality, stop exploiting the uneducated and unemployed and pay a decent wage for a descent quality labor. Now why would McDonald's want to go and do that? Lol. Maybe the ensuing lawsuits will be motivation enough. Maybe, maybe not. One thing is sure - boy it's a hard job working for McDonalds.

Sometimes all we need is a little motivation to jump start career goals. In which case getting motivated means it’s time to get motivated and get on your way. Ted talks might be the way to go for you if feel like you’re pigeon holed or simply need some mental cleansing to prepare you for your dream job. What do Ted talks have to offer? Who would benefit? Well a few of my favorites include:
- A kinder, gentler philosophy of success
- The surprising science of motivation
- Smash Fear, learn anything
Those are just a few but believe me there are a host of others to choose from. Take a look as see what you think, there’s a least a half dozen other topics to choose from. Get Ted, Get Going, Get Motivated!
