Nothing is free...including being out of work. If you've been on the job hunt trail for longer than 6 months than surely you know job hunting expenses are too high and help is surely wanted in lowering those costs. Of course getting back to work ASAP is preferred but at least you shouldn't have to beg, borrow and steal just to maintain the costs of looking for job. It absolutely ridiculous how the job seeker is being gouged by every Tom, Dick and Harry while trying to get back on their feet. There used to be some honor in the game but maybe not so much these days.
Anyway, there are still a few ways job seekers can cut job hunting costs. Better stated -- recoup job hunting costs. How? Uncle Sam, how else? It's tax time again! No worries, even if you have been unemployed for a while and don't have a great deal of income you still have some noteworthy tax deductions to take advantage of. Take for example the costs for printing, preparation and mailing of resumes during your job search. Tax deductible. Did you work with recruiters, temporary employment or outsourcing companies? Tax deductible. Did you relocate or do you have significant travel expenses related to your job search. Tax deductible. Starting to get the picture? There are still a few bones Uncle Sam throws your way...don't expect unemployment insurance to be one of them though. Unfortunately, unemployment insurance is considered taxable income. Hummh, don't you just love the shifting definition of "income"?
Nonetheless job hunting expenses are rather high these days and since help is wanted, Uncle Sam comes to the rescue with some value tax breaks to increase your tax refund to start the new year out right. So head on over to H&R Block and get your money. If you prefer online Complete Tax is worth investigating.
