You've heard of AOL and Huffington Post right? You know the big deal where AOL spent $315 million for Huffington Post? Well the AOL deal has turned out to equate to big job losses for the techie types. Mergers and acquisitions often mean job cuts right? So what's the big deal with the AOL acquisition and the 900 job cuts that come with the acquisition? Well for starters, how about the 700 job cuts in India? Oh and the US wasn't left out, either, there are 200 job cuts in the US as well. So again what's the big deal? Could this be a signal that overseas cheap labor sweat shops are no longer attractive to big corporations anymore? Maybe so, since countries like India have been steadily growing their infrastructure and workforce such that India is increasing becoming more of an innovator and product/service producer.
As for AOL, why bother with buying the Huffington Post and then cut 900 jobs? Well, AOL is transforming into a content provider versus an internet portal. Hey Yahoo, are you listening? Content is King -- more specifically, high quality content. You know, content that is actually created by humans for human consumption as opposed to content farming. Incidentally, Google has taken a stance on content farms, which appears to have had a negative impact on AOL traffic. Maybe, AOL's current shift to producing real quality content has something to do with that. You think? Well anyway, the 900 AOL job cuts are not all bad as the focus is shifting from a big staff of the techie types to more editorial staff. So maybe it's safe to say, job cuts on one side, hiring on the other. At least for now, the AOL deal brings big job losses for the techies. Stay tuned for an update on AOL's specific hiring goals.
